Dan Telosky

Dan Telosky grew up along the shores of Discovery Passage on Vancouver Island, with a clear view of British Columbia's maritime traffic. His interest in, and affinity for, B.C.'s working boats has grown over the years, and what began as artistic dabbling has advanced to his all consuming passion.

Starting from Campbell River, his home port, Dan spends countless hours on the water in his own slow moving trawler, taking reference photos of tugs, fish boats and freighters, from every imaginable angle.

What marks Dan's style is his focus on detail and his need to "get it right." Are the boat's features accurate? Is it sitting true? Is the sky clear? Overcast? Cloudy? Are there trees, mountains, or other vessels in the background? Is the day sunny and warm? Cool and windy?

“And then there's the water, the most important element,” says Dan. “That's my main concern, the water. What color is she now? What kind of mood is she in? Is she calm, angry, lazy? Capturing these subtle elements is the challenge. When I finally get all the elements right and I’m happy with the water, then it’s a successful painting.”

It takes many hours, and sometimes weeks, for Dan to painstakingly produce a painting that completes his vision, without compromise. Combining the understanding that comes from years of being on the water with his keen eye Dan creates his acrylic paintings.
